Brief Description:  Garmin 196 & MGL

Just returned from a few weeks in Nevada, so no work was done on the Onex.

While away I did make a small wooden fixture to enlarge the center hole of the A-223 pullies from 1/4" to 5/16". Tried it on a pulley today. I had drilled the 1" counterbores a little too deep (didn't have a pulley with me) and as a result it would not clamp the pulley enough to hold it from rotating while drilling. I inserted a 1" dia flat washer in one counterbore and the fixture now works fine. Thanks to Loren Sievila for this idea posted on his MyKitLog entry of 2-20-2012 and my brother Tom for providing tools, material and guidance.

Spent some time getting a recently purchased Garmin GPSMap196 updated to the latest firmware (v4.6). Once getting it connected to the computer and the port assigned, it went smoothly. I'll wait until close to flying time to update the aviation database. The installed database expired 30 Oct 2003. I don't think it has been updated since new.

Also worked on an older Stratomaster "L" (predecessor to the "XL") to check it out. Made an OAT sensor from a National Semiconductor LM335AZ. Just soldered a couple of leads to the 2 appropriate pins (data sheet available on the National Semiconductor site), put heat shrink on the soldered leads, then more heat shrink around the entire assembly. Before final heat shrinking, I filled the cavity with silicon seal in hopes of improving water resistance since it should be mounted exposed to ambient air. Then attached the sensor to the Stratomaster display unit and it works fine.

The RDAC IV unit did not have a connector attached so I got wire code info from MGL. Attached a 1/8" stereo phone plug per the instructions: shield wire/gnd to body, red wire/+volts to band, blue wire/data to tip.

Plugged the display unit and RDAC together and only got momentary RDAC info, then the display says "no data from RDAC". Will need to troubleshoot some more.
